Mid-Program Tips

I will start posting tips for the Mid-Program Review, and if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me and I will get advice from the 2nd years (so it is not just me here).

When you have your meeting to pick spots in the gallery you may not end up with the space that (to you) would be ideal, either lighting wise or size wise. Last year we had some pretty tiny areas so a lot of editing and planning was necessary. Choosing what to display is something to discuss with your mentor, but use your critiques for practice.

If you have been putting up everything you have made between crits (which I hope is not the case unless it was really time consuming) then be more selective. Only put up what you really want feedback on or what you think is the strongest. This will aid in seeing how you can control a discussion about your work.

This is just to get you thinking, I will get into more details later...

Reminder: For the 2nd Years...

Grad meeting tomorrow at Noon.

Whittier and Water

With the lovely weather this past weekend and spring coming up we now have some 'water collectors' so you don't need to try to find an empty garbage can. Also, if you have had as much stuff ruined from water as I have, you may want to get some sort of plastic covering and keep important things covered all the time since leaks seem to always come at the worst time and in the worst place...

Reminder: Foot in the Door 4

All submitted artwork will be exhibited as long as the piece does not exceed one cubic foot.
Submissions can be made in person
February 4-6, 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.;
or Sunday,
February 7, 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts;
or received by mail by February 8: MAEP's "Foot in the Door 4," 2400 Third Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55404.

Each artwork is limited to one cubic foot. For example, a two-dimensional work (including frame) cannot extend beyond 12 × 12 inches square; a three-dimensional work (including the base) must fit within a 12-inch cube.

Megan Vossler, Saul Chernick, Kwabena Slaughter

Franklin Art Works

Friday, January 29, 2010
7:00pm - 10:00pm

Each artist’s work addresses the dynamic relationships between figure(s) and landscape.

The exhibitions will open on Friday, January 29 with a reception from 7 to 9pm. Admission is free. The exhibitions will remain on view through Saturday, March 20, 2010.

In the Main Gallery
Megan Vossler: Sound Signals

Megan Vossler will present a suite of drawings in the Main Gallery, depicting a continuous landscape and narrative carried over multiple sheets of paper.

Vossler’s installation presents an epically scaled northern landscape dotted with human figures, caribou, trees and the shadow of a hovering helicopter – all reassessing their positions within an environment that has been indelibly changed. The landscape through which these figures move is marked by signs of ruin, including collapsed buildings, piles of rubble, scorched trees, and a flooded canyon. The exhibition’s title, Sound Signals, is a phrase from nautical navigation, in which sound indicates to sailors the position and proximity of ships in the distance.
